- Plot: Groucho Marx is one of many stars to make a; radio broadcast their debut, only to move to TV; once the radio show reached popularity. But Marx didn't go the usual route with a sitcom or talk show, but rather, he made a name for himself hosting a game show called,; You Bet Your Life. The show, broadcast on radio, originally aired in 1947,; becoming a televised radio show in 1950. But things didn't go off without a; hitch-sponsors nearly backed out when Marx refused to wear a costume on air.; Without sponsorship the show would have been canceled. Luckily, the comedian was able to continue with the backing of the sponsors and without having to wear a costume when he pointed out that there was no contract clause stating; that he must do so. Marx's attitude about the whole thing was, 'If I can't be; funny on television without funny; clothes and makeup, to hell with it!'; But Marx was funny and he became; infamous for his improvisational; grilling of contestants. In fact, some of; is onstage antics are the most; hilarious in the history of television!; He had a quick wit and an uncanny; knack of delivering the punch line.; His show lasted until 1961 and by that; time, the name had been changed to; The Groucho Show in an effort to; distance it from the game show scandals of; the time. When the show was finally canceled; in 1961, it was not due to a lack of; entertainment, but rather, public interest; had shifted away from game shows; altogether. But by that time, Groucho; Marx had already reached a high celebrity; status for his original comedic stylings and; rapiers wit that has made him one of the; most unique and talented; comedians the world over.
