  • Plot: Antarctic Mission: The Science; ; The crew of the ocean-going ship SEDNA IV sets sail for the last pristine continent in the world - Antarctica. Their mission - to document the effects of climate change around the Antarctic Peninsula: the place where rapid warming in recent decades has been most evident. One of the greatest expeditions of our time takes us on a scientific quest, along with leading experts, to better understand the impact of climate warming on the whole planet.; ; In the first episode, ISLANDS AT THE EDGE, the crew visit one of the last great wildlife refuges on the planet - the Island of South Georgia. Hundreds of thousands of penguins, fur seals, albatross and elephant seals come here in a breathtaking natural spectacle. But behind the astounding beauty of these Sub-Antarctic Islands lurks a silent and little known secret. Despite their isolated location at the end of the Earth, the islands of the Southern Ocean are already feeling the devastating effects of climate change.; ; In the second episode, A WINDOW ON A CHANGING CLIMATE, SEDNA IV takes advantage of the annual summer retreat of the pack ice to make her way to the Antarctic mainland. Scientists from around the globe work together to better understand the impact of warming observed in recent decades. By tracking enormous drifting icebergs and studying the declining colonies of Adelie penguins, reserachers deepen our understanding of the crucial role Antarctica plays in the vast planetary climate cycle.; ; In the third episode, THE GREAT OCEAN OF ICE, the ship continues southwards to document the effects of climate warming on Antarctic marine life. With the arrival of winter, the crew of the SEDNA IV face extreme isolation and the long polar night in order to experience first-hand the changes occurring in the Southern Ocean. This is Antarctica in all its splendour. Beneath the silent power of its beauty are the scientists' cries of alarm - will we hear them?
