Indie Spotlight

Where would independent music be without independent radio? Confined to the "local" sections of kind-hearted record stores and the CD players of hard-listening music fiends most likely. Two who recognized this problem were Kitchener singer-songwriter Todd Donald and promoter Carrie Humphries. Both have tirelessly promoted independent music on their respective campus radio shows for the past couple years, but they've just recently joined forces to launch I.R.I.S., (Indie Rock Invasion Show), on CJIQ 88.3 FM. Every Friday evening between 7:00pm and 9:00pm you can tune in to hear all the most vital local rock you could ever hope to find. Not content to just play the tunes though, Todd and Carrie are also flourishing into serious promoters, putting their money where their mouths are putting on local shows, loaded with excellent unsigned artists. If you're really intent on keeping your finger to the pulse of local indie rock, their show is not to be missed.

I had a cassette with a cover of the cramps "Human Fly". I thought it was perhaps Iggy Pop but numerous searches yielded no results. It's quite a bit heavier than the original and in my opinion even better. I would love to find it. Help me Alan Cross, you are my only hope. Thanks in advance.

I just bought the new Dinosaur Jr. album Beyond and was wondering if you have ever done a show on either Dinosaur Jr. and the evolution of the band, or J. Mascis as an artist including time with Dino, his solo work and other side projects (I hear he played drums for a few bands). Thanks.

I am a recent graduate of Mohawk College, in the Radio Broadcasting program and have been having a hard time finding a job. I did a couple years of volunteering at the campus radio station and was part of a team that broadcasted Mohawk college basketball games live. In my 2nd year Barry Taylor and yourself came and spoke to our class. My question is, since I am having a hard time finding a job, what advice can you give me to help me get my foot in the door to start my career off? I really want to get into sports on the radio, but anything to start off is fine. I just want to find any job in radio to start working my way up in the industry and also to learn a lot from the job. Thanks for taking the time to read this and thanks again.
